Fred Cooper was the father of the recently-deceased Ivy Cooper. In the Great War (1914-18), he served in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was captured by the Enemy in March 1918 and remained a prisoner in Germany until Christmas Day of the same year. There still exist two certificates which were given to him on his return to England. One was "from the people of Sedlescombe".
