Ancient Woodworking Techniques. The High Weald AONB has uploaded a talk by Damian Goodburn - www.youtube.com/highwealdaonb - one of Britain’s leading specialists in ancient woodworking. Archaeologists are gaining a fascinating insight into past woodland management and carpentry techniques, based on the evidence of ancient worked timber which is constantly being found all over the UK.  Evidence comes from excavation of archaeological sites, in particular where the wood is waterlogged, and from upstanding historic buildings.

Damian has spent a lot of time testing replicas of old tools, from flint axes to bronze and iron axes.  He says ‘Every tool leaves telltale marks in the wood’.  He has used reconstruction archaeology to compare his woodworking marks to those left behind in ancient timbers.  Much of this evidence is starting to challenge some of the conventional views of woodland history, management and clearance.

If you own woodland and would like to find out more about its history The High Weald AONB may be able to help.  Contact Matt Pitts, The High Weald AONB’s woodland officer to arrange a FREE visit. Tel 01580 879959 or email matt@highweald.info  or visit www.highweald.org/livingwoods for more details.
