Development of Park View, The Street, Sedlescombe. The Clerk reported receipt of an e-mail from the County Archaeologist (Casper Johnson) regarding the plans to amend the layout of the Park View site in order to preserve archaeological remains in situ beneath a parking area. Archaeology South-East has been employed by the applicant and has found features which are mostly post-medieval in date. The County Archaeologist is awaiting a draft report on the findings, so there may be earlier evidence. The work also included sample excavation of two of the tanks associated with the tanning or fellmongering industry that occupied the site in the post-medieval to early modern period. One of the research objectives of the mitigation work is to try to understand how early that industry started on this specific site. Archaeology South-East will be producing a report on their recording work and a copy of that will be publicly accessible in due course.
